Travel writer Alistair Wearmouth wrote an interesting article for the Away.com travel site  on where to travel if ye wanna be  living like a pirate, or simply to catch some good old fashioned pirate action.  Safe pirate action, that is. Here are Away.com’s top ten picks; tell us if you know any other good pirate hideouts in the comments section below.

#1: Pirate Festivals
Given their colleague’s passion for all things pirate, it’s no surprise that there are some fun pirate festivals out there at which to get in the spirit of things. Grand Cayman hosts an annual Pirates Week each November, where revelers dress up as pirates and “invade” the harbor by boat. Tampa’s Gasparilla Pirate Festival, held in early February, is another buccaneering good time.

#2: Blackbeard’s Last Stand
There’s no better ambassador for the pirating fraternity than the 18th century’s Edward Teach, better known to all but his mom as Blackbeard. To get to know the man, mellow out on North Carolina’s Ocracoke Island, a two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Cedar Island on the mainland or a shorter 40-minute hop from Hatteras on the Outer Banks. Sample the good life in the Ocracoke Village pub, or hop a kayak for a cruise through the same tidal marshes where Blackbeard met his watery end in 1718.

#3: Disney’s Castaway Cay
Blackbeard might be where the real historical action was at, but it was all Cap’n Jack Sparrow and those pirates of the Caribbean before today’s Somali goons got in on the game. In true schmaltzy Disney fashion, Castaway Cay, a private port-of-call for Disney cruises in the Bahamas, features the pirate ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, and characters playing the part of Johnny Depp’s now-legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.

#4: Hong Kong & the South China Sea
As a child I lived in Hong Kong and remember seeing news footage of pirates heisting a gleaming S-class Mercedes off to their lair on the back of a high-powered speedboat; the chasing coastguard were no match. Piracy has been a profitable business in this part of the world since as early as 220 A.D. following the tumultuous collapse of the Hang Dynasty. The British put a lid on things to protect their slice of the burgeoning opium trade in the late 19th century, but pirates still see juicy pickings out here in the shape of big shipping lanes that keep the world stocked with cheap plastic toys.

#5: Pirate-Themed Cruises
A little closer to home, but certainly more family-friendly, lots of maritime outfitters put on skull-and-crossbone-themed cruises for l’il (and big) pirates. For example, take a look at the Pirate Adventures cruises that sail out of Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay or from Manteo in North Carolina’s Outer Banks; there’s also the Captain Memo cruise that sails out of Tampa in search of treasure and some good, clean fun.

#6: Florida Keys
Consistent with its history as a bootlegger and secessionist paradise, the Florida Keys, and in particular Key West, is imbued with a rich history of piracy. All those European navies battling for colonial supremacy brought with them an opposing ragtag posse of gold-digging (literally) opportunists, today’s version of the Afghan warlord. The Keys were the prime strategic hub for raiding opportunities among the islands of the Caribbean, as well as important trading routes linking the New and Old worlds.

#7. Madagascar
This is as close as you’ll get to the Horn of Africa without getting an Uzi aimed at your head. Pirates are the entrepreneurs of the high seas, so it makes perfect sense that they’d sit off the key trading routes for the best pickings. In the early days of the expansion of the British Empire and the flow of goods between the mother country and colonies like India and Malaya, pirates used the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar as their hideout. And unlike today’s Somalia, Madagascar is a peaceful and safe place to visit.

#8. Treasure Island Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas
Where else could you pit a posse of scantily-clad “sirens” and band of testosterone-charged pirates against each other, then devolve it all into what Treasure Island’s website calls a 21st-century party of “music, dance, excitement and seduction”? In the bone-dry desert? Yeah, only in Vegas, where the nightly Sirens of TI performance is probably not quite what those Zodiac-riding Somali teenagers have in mind when they imagine pirate martyrdom. Or not.

#9. Execution Dock, London
It’s not just Hillary Clinton who has a zero-tolerance piracy policy. With supremacy of the oceans of such importance to the expanding British Empire of the 18th and 19th centuries, piracy was one irritant and obstacle for which the punishment was death. Captured pirates were taken to Execution Dock just downstream from the Tower of London on the River Thames, where they’d be taught the ultimate lesson for challenging the rule of the crown. East London’s nearby Captain Kidd pub may be the best place to contemplate if piracy is the career for you.

#10. Tortuga Island, Haiti
There’s a line from my four-year-old son’s CD of Swashbuckling Sea Songs that I can’t get out of my head whenever I read something about piracy these days: “When you see Tortuga’s coast, oh you’re gonna be smilin’; the songs, the fights, the days, the nights, there’s so much to behold.” This small Caribbean isle off the coast of today’s Haiti, so-named by Christopher Columbus because its shape resembled a turtle, was one of the first hideouts for Spanish-hating French boucaniers after the Spanish drove them off the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). The island still has that primitive, forgotten feel—though you can probably leave your cutlass at home.

So there you have some pretty choice pirate coves. Tell us about yer favorites, mateys!

Mardi Gras is Here!
It’s that time of year again. Fat Tuesday lands on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The time of eating, partying and celebrating.

But why do we do it? Most of the party goers really have no idea, other than it is a celebration time!

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is celebrated by Catholics worldwide in anticipation of Lent. Ash Wednesday, or the day after Fat Tuesday, is the first day of lent for Catholics. A time of fasting and preparing for the wonderful Easter miracle.

Since Lent begins the time of giving up some of your indulgences, Fat Tuesday gives people a time to indulge and make merry while they can.

One of the largest and most popular Mardi Gras carnivals is held in New Orleans, La, though there are hundreds of such carnivals or festivals around the world.

Festival goers often dress in costumes, masks and other party attire.

The parade with more than 110 units will get under way at 1 p.m.

“We are telling everyone to come early this year because of construction on Interstate 110,” said Nancy Rogers, executive director of the Gulf Coast Carnival Association.

The draw span on Interstate 110 is undergoing improvements and as a result, wide or large loads are not allowed on the bridge. Floats will have to come to Biloxi across the Biloxi Bay Bridge from the east or Cowan-Lorraine Road from the west, Rogers said.

Since Mardi Gras is later this year with the weather more spring-like, Rogers said she expects the crowds to be larger than normal.

“We normally get 60,000 to 65,000 people. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s up to 80,000 on Tuesday,” she said.

The parade will start at Martin Luther King and Main Street, go south on Main, west on Fred Haise Boulevard (U.S. 90), north on Lameuse Street, west on Washington Loop, south on Reynoir Street, west on Fred Haise Boulevard, north on Porter Avenue, east on Howard Avenue and north on Caillevet to disband at Esters.

Biloxi’s first Mardi Gras parade was in 1908 and the monarchs were crowned King d’Iberville and Queen Ixolib. From that start, the Gulf Coast Carnival Association was officially formed in 1949.

The 2011 coronation ball will be at 8 p.m. today [sru: March 7 : ]at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum & Convention Center in Biloxi, Rogers said.

“The tableau is free to the public so they can watch it,” she said.

To view the court and crowning of King D’Iberville and Queen Ixolib, guests are asked to enter the coliseum on the Beauvior Road side and go to the balcony. Seating will be allowed up to 7:45 p.m. The coronation ceremony is normally over by 10 p.m., Rogers said.

For the parade on Tuesday, people who are on floats are asked to only ride on them during the parade.

“Floats are not suppose to arrive with riders already on them. It’s a bigger safety issue than I was aware of,” Rogers said.

The parade is so long, that quite often the beginning meets the last float as it is leaving the staging area. The end of the Gulf Coast Carnival Association parade will consist of seven floats from the Krewe of Neptune.

“After the parade, we are concerned about traffic leaving Biloxi. We want everyone to enjoy the day and be patient,” Rogers said.

A Jambo show is:  A bit of laid-back rock, some raunchy country, a blender full of Jimmy Buffett and a handful of my own tunes all washed down with a couple cold beers and a shot of tequila (salt and lime, please)

His friends are calling it “Mustache Rock!”

He has performed over 175 shows in 2009, in locations ranging from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Key West, Florida.

His friend gave him the nickname “Jambo.” He later found out that Jambo means “Hello!” in Swahili (for real). That wasn’t his friends’ intention, but it made him like the name even more!

Jambo Joe Bones has been playing guitar and singing since he was a kid. His dad is a musician and he put a guitar in Jambos’ hands as soon as he could hold one. For this Jambo is forever grateful. His mom is a musician too. He remembers hearing her play songs from The Sound of Music on the piano when he was just a wee parakeet. His younger brother followed suit and soon they were both playing guitar, piano and drums. Music was all over the house.

Obviously music became a huge part of his life at a very early age. Soon Jambo was collecting his own albums… including his first Kiss Album. Other albums included Charlie Daniels, Queen, Lynard Skynard, Boston, Billy Joel, Hank Williams Jr, AC/DC, Van Halen and so on.

Then in the mid 80’s, a friend of Jambos’ said, “I think you’d really like this guy named Jimmy Buffett.” Of course Jambo had heard the song Margaritaville, but wasn’t really familiar with his other songs, so he bought his first Jimmy Buffett album, and he was hooked. Jimmy’s music brought back the familiar style of music Jambo heard coming from his parents’ record player in the mid 70s. Acoustic-based, lyrical music. Plus his songs had a touch of fun, irony and humor I hadn’t heard before in music.

So now, many years and guitar strings later, Jambo has this urge to play fun and familiar music for everyone. Come out and see him sometime! We think you’ll find a song or two you can sing along with!

After days of deliberation, and a barrel of rum or two… the crew has come to a final decision for the “Name That Skull” contest winner. 

We had many good entries, and Party Pirate just couldn’t decide on a winner, but did decide to pass the rum around to the crew. 

As the crew shared the entries, and discussed the possibilities, the rum was disappearing…

and a decision was made to “Name That Skull”…. RUMSKULL !!! 

However….. when the crew went to notify the winner who submitted the name, the entry could not be found… 

It seems that the crew had a little too much rum, and had elaborated on the entry that was submitted by Rebecca Schaaf, which was Rum Numbskull, Numb for short.

 So, in all fairness, the winner of the $75 shopping spree for the Pirate Store is awarded to Rebecca Schaaf,  and the skull will be named “Rumskull”.

 Congratulations Rebecca!
