History of the Original Tiki Bar and Restaurant

The Original Tiki Bar & Restaurant was built in early 1990 at the Fort Pierce City Marina, Florida. The Tiki Bar, as it is affectionately known, soon became a favorite destination for those in search of great food and drinks, all served in a tropical setting.

Situated on the banks of the Indian River, the Tiki Bar boasts open-air dining under an authentic Tiki thatched roof. In August of 1998, the Lloyd family acquired the Tiki Bar and continues to operate the restaurant to this day.

There have been two major changes; the first change to occur at the Tiki Bar was the construction of a new dining room addition in October of 1998. The popularity of the Tiki Bar warranted the transformation of the restaurant from a 60 seat dining room to one with 200 seats. It is not uncommon to see all 200 seats taken with a line of hungry and thirsty patrons waiting at the door for a seat.

The second biggest change to occur at the Tiki Bar came as a result of Mother Nature. In September of 2004, the Treasure coast of Florida was hit by two major hurricanes only weeks apart, Frances and Jeanne. The devastating winds and storm surge not only destroyed almost the entire Fort Pierce City Marina but also wreaked havoc on the Tiki Bar. The Tiki Bar sustained major damage to its roof, kitchen, bathrooms and interior decor. The restaurant was forced to close for four months while crews worked around the clock to restore the Tiki Bar to its original luster. The hard work paid off and on December, 31, 2004, the Tiki Bar once again opened its doors – “Better than ever!”

Try starting your visit at the newly constructed marina and make sure to stop by the No Worries Bar and Grill.  We were there in August, and I sampled the Huevos Rancheros for $5.99—yeah, five bucks for an authentic Mexican pirate breakfast! Not to mention the Bloody Marys—they were just as good (if not better) than the food, which is not really a fair statement since a Bloody Mary is a meal in glass, but you get the idea 

After your meal, browse around the shop where you will find some really great designs on all types of clothing from the No Worries line.  Shhhhh! Don’t tell, but rumor has it that nouveau pirate extraordinaire, Kenny Chesney has been seen Living Like a Pirate and hunting for treasure in his favorite No Worries hat.  And if it’s good enough for Kenny, it’s good enough for us!

Playa De Los Muertos

With a name like that, you know we had to check it out!  “The beach of the dead” was named for the pirate raids of the near by town way back when.  Don’t let the name scare you away.  This place is far from dead these days. It is located just south of old town and is popular with locals and tourists alike. 

We decided on a beachfront restaurant (of which there are many) called “La Palapa”,

and we loved this place.  For about $70 USD (incl. tax) the two of us enjoyed the most fabulous gourmet meal with incredible presentation as well as service.  We had everything from mussels to lobster ice cream—yes lobster ice cream! —And it was fantastic.  Did I mention that price included drinks as well?  While this was not a “cheap” Mexican meal, we felt it was more than a value especially when you throw in the outrageous sunset we were offered, courtesy of the universe! 

When you visit Puerto Vallarta on your next pirating trip, Playa De Los Muertos must be on list of places to see.  Check it out for yourselves and let us know what you think!
