From the last weekend of March through the first weekend of April every year, the citizens of New Orleans celebrate NOLA Pyrate Week – 10 days of swashbuckling, art, music, food, events and general camaraderie among the Pyrates of New Orleans – past & present – and their mates from around the globe!

They’ve taken all the fun and also made it meaningful – throughout the 10 days Pyrates give back to the city they love…volunteering with rebuilding projects like lowernine.org and raising funds for many others. In 2009 they helped raise $10,000 for various charities in the city, including $8,000 to the family of NOPD Det. Tommie Felix.

NOLA Pyrate Week was originally conceived and developed in the heart of New Orleans by a small group of like minded “Pyrates of The New World” – now joined by many other Pyrates, Artists, Musicians, Community/Charitable Organizations, Krewes, Local Businesses and other citizens who support our creed: “Take what ye can…GIVE something back!”™

Russell Newberry landed his first Bering Sea crab job at age 24 aboard the fishing vessel Diamond Head. Over the years, he developed a reputation as a hard working, dependable “crustacean excavator”.

During the 2006 King Crab season, Russell landed a half-share job aboard the F/V Time Bandit, a featured vessel on Discovery Channel’s reality show Deadliest Catch. When the rest of the crew quit, he found himself propelled to a full share job. His endeavors aboard the Time Bandit have been documented on TV and in the book “Time Bandit” by Malcolm McPherson.

2009 was a crazy year for Russell. He left port on the Time Bandit, only to find himself returning to port on another featured vessel the Wizard. When opilio season was over he moved to a new featured vessel, The Kodiak for King Crab season. Three crab vessels in one year! Three very different operations. Six to eight different captains! But one thing stayed the same—the crew. Always tired, always wet and always watching each others backs.

The Midwest’s only and the nation’s largest indoor all-sail boat show will arrive January 27–30, 2011 at Chicago’s famous Navy Pier. Strictly Sail Chicago has become a must do event for all sailors and has become Chicago’s favorite boat show. Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade DECK THE HULLS!!!! Schooner Wharf bar is once again proud to present the Annual Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade. This favorite holiday maritime event will take place on December 11^th in Key West Bight and Harbor.  The Gerald Adams Elementary School Steel Your Heart Band kicks off the festivities at 6:00 pm with a set of holiday tunes and standards on stage at Schooner Wharf.

The boats come very close to the docks at Schooner Wharf to give the viewers and the judges a good look at all the creative imaginative holiday decorations. You can sip on your favorite holiday drink such as Swedish glogg, hot apple jack or eggnog, while watching this magical display of holiday spirit and listening to the hot sounds of the best music the island has to offer.

This year’s cash awards and prizes total over $24,500 in value! Twelve winning places will be awarded!! The Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolute Vodka Lighted Boat Parade is a big family affair for Key West and the Florida Keys; parade participants and spectators on the docks watching the parade feel as if they are part of one big family. Decorations on the boats are plentiful and very imaginative. The best viewing is at Schooner Wharf Bar, where the judges’ stand is located and at the Lighted Boat Parade Party at Conch Republic Seafood Co.
