VICTORVILLE, Calif. – The idea might run through many a mind, but, most often, it is but a fleeting notion: Putting your career on hold, selling off your worldly possessions and sailing away into the sunset, away from the stress and conventionalism of everyday life.

But for Carrie Caldwell Bershee and her husband, Bryan, the idea was much more than a daydream. So you really want to know what we mean by ‘Hunt for Treasure, Treasure the Hunt’?   Then check out “The Art of Travel”. What a find!  We just watched this movie over the weekend, and loved it!

 “The Art of Travel” stars Christopher Masterson in the lead role (some of you might remember him from Malcolm in the Middle—he played the eldest son).  Here he portrays Connor Layne, a young adult just graduating from high school, who, on his wedding day, makes a life-altering decision.

This movie is truly about following your heart, and hunting for your own treasure, wherever that hunt may lead you.  The tag line, “The art of travel is deviating from one’s path” holds the essence of the film. While in Panama, Connor meets a couple that have made it their life’s work to lead a year-long expedition across the Darien jungle of Central America. Through the trials and tribulations of such an undertaking, Connor comes to some revelations about himself, the world around him, and falls deeply and truly in love.

 The scenery throughout the movie is astounding, and the film even won an award at the Oxford Film Festival in 2008 for best cinematography. You will have to suspend your reality for about 60 of the 100 minutes and just not ask yourself where the main character comes up with the money to fund his world travels.  But hey, reality is highly overrated! Besides, the message and inspiration you receive from the overall film is well worth the temporarily relaxed mental state!

 If this movie doesn’t get you started on your own treasure hunt, something is wrong with you!  Don’t get us wrong.  We are not suggesting you have to give up everything and take a knapsack to a third-world country to find yourself.  What you simply must do though, is live for yourself by making your life a treasure hunt.  Life is too short to live under someone else’s expectations!

The Drinking (and Eating) Man’s Guide to the BVI

Never pillage on an empty stomach—words of wisdom no pirate should forget!  With that thought in mind we offer the following book review: The Drinking (and Eating) Man’s Guide to the BVI by Julian Putley (3^rd ed.).  This was a great find when we visited Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands.  Get it?  BVI! 

Billed as “A guide to the islands’ best bars” not only does this handy little book include an exhaustive list of the bars in the BVI’s, it also has tips on which places include food service, if takeout is available, delineates specialized food items and even includes a map (not to be used for navigational purposes of course!) of all the sites mentioned.  

For each bar/eatery listed there is a phone number, VHF channel, and web site (if applicable) along with at least one specialty drink recipe and directions.  So you could make the drinks on your own without actually visiting, but where’s the fun in that? 

And just to keep things light and fun, The Guide is filled with cartoons, toasts, and thoughts to ponder.  One of our favorites being, “The real mystery of life is not a problem to be solved, it is a reality to be experienced” (pg.29).  If all this is not enough for you, the last few pages are chock full of free appetizers, drinks, and 2 for 1 coupons for many of the establishments reviewed by the author. 

So get out there and start experiencing your own reality whether  it’s in the Caribbean or in your own backyard.  Just remember to always, always treasure the hunt!
